The Premier Cru vineyard Clos Saint-Jacques is Gevrey-Chambertin's most renowned climat. It is widely regarded, alongside neighbouring Les Cazetiers, as having the necessary qualities of a Grand Cru. Esmonin's section of the Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard lies at its northern end, upon high-quality white marl soils, similar to those found in the Le Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard. These soils, rich in limestone, divert water away from the surface of the ground, ensuring the vines receive adequate hydration, whilst curtailing the risk of waterlogging. The southeast-facing slopes of the Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard have sufficient exposure to sunlight, allowing grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness. The cooling wind flowing through the valley simultaneously slows the ripening process, and the Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard is often harvested after the Grand Cru vineyards.

The Domaine Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. The fermentation includes a large proportion of whole bunch fruit, which encourages it to begin faster, reflecting Esmonin’s preferred winemaking style. Following two weeks of vatting, the wine is subsequently transferred into oak barrels, up to 70% new. Focussed and tightly wound in their youth, the Domaine Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques is a beautiful, energetic and harmonious wine, designed for longer cellaring. The renowned Burgundy expert Jasper Morris MW has awarded various vintages of this wines scores of 90+ points.
