An introduction to Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

Gevrey-Chambertin is a commune situated in the prestigious Côte-d'Or in eastern France’s iconic Burgundy wine region. It encompasses Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards planted with Pinot Noir. The Village level covers about 314 hectares of lieux-dits. As its name suggests, the Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is crafted from old vines for superior fruit. This Village Burgundy offers a concentrated core of red cherry, strawberry and blackberry, with undertones of liquorice as well as hints of smoke. Earthy mushroom, barnyard and forest floor are at the forefront of this well-structured wine with velvety tannins and spicy oak. The domaine produces 3,000 to 4,000 bottles annually. This Burgundy is suitable for ageing but can also be appreciated young with a few hours of decanting.

Understanding Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

The Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is made from Pinot Noir grapes cultivated in different Village plots across Gevrey-Chambertin. The vines were planted between 1965 and 1985 and have been farmed organically since 2003. This Pinot Noir is nourished by clay-limestone soils. In the winery, part-whole clusters are used for judicious tannic management. The overall approach to élevage involves minimal intervention to support the unique expression of the Gevrey-Chambertin terroir as well as each vintage. Fermentation is solely with ambient yeasts, and wines are not filtered. This Village-level Burgundy matures in 30% new oak for 16 to 18 months.
