An introduction to Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Petite Chapelle Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

Petite Chapelle is a Premier Cru vineyard located in the renowned Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of Burgundy in eastern France. This 5.5-hectare, east-facing climat neighbours Grand Cru vineyards En la Chapelle and Les Gèmeaux. Historical evidence suggests that it was once considered part of the former. Petite Chapelle had built a reputation for elegant well-structured Pinot Noir. This old-vine Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle Vieille Vignes offers notes of ripe black fruit, spice, liquorice, mocha and game. Medium-bodied and rounded, the wine’s firm tannins mingle with its layers of fruit harmoniously. This Premier Cru has received multiple scores of 95-points and above from renowned critics like Tim Atkin MW and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py wines are crafted with longer ageing potential but can be enjoyed young with careful decanting. The domaine produces 1,000 to 1,500 bottles annually.

Understanding Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Petite Chapelle Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py cultivates just under a third of a hectare of Pinot Noir vines in Petite Chapelle. This easternmost Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru vineyard is more gradually sloped than other Cru vineyards in this commune, allowing it to benefit from gentle sunlight for steady grape ripening. Heavy clay-limestone soils give the wines from this climat good structure and concentration. Vines date back to 1964 and are farmed organically. The winemaking team at Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py has a minimal interventionist approach. Ambient yeasts are used in the fermentation and the wines are not filtered to support their distinctive terroir character and each vintage expression. This Premier Cru wine matures for 16 to 18 months in 100% new oak.
