An introduction to Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin, Cuvee Coeur de Roy Tres Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

Gevrey-Chambertin is both a village and an acclaimed appellation in the renowned Côte de Nuits area of Burgundy in eastern France, which comprises Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. The Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey Chambertin Coeur de Roy Tres Vieilles Vignes is a Village level blend of old-vine Pinot Noir that grows across four vine parcels around the village. Its regal-sounding moniker is a proprietary label named after a family that formerly owned the main parcel of vines that makes up this red blend. This Village Burgundy displays rich, powerful spicy dark fruit, forest floor and savoury barnyard notes. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with grainy tannins. Good acidity balances the fruit core and the finish is long. Highly regarded for both its old vines and long-living wines, this Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py is enjoyable at any age and has good cellaring potential. The domaine produces between 4,500-5,100 bottles of this wine annually.

Understanding Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin, Cuvee Coeur de Roy Tres Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

For its Coeur Roy blend, Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py cultivates four parcels of Pinot Noir across three hectares around Gevrey-Chambertin named Les Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise and Les Marchais. The vines were planted between 1910 and 1965 in nourishing clay-limestone plots with south and east aspects. The vines are farmed organically. This is followed by traditional, non-interventionist vinification which sees ambient yeast and no filtering. The deep ruby hue and richness of this wine are a result of high skin-to-pulp ratio rather than over-extraction in the winery. This Burgundy is matured in 80% new oak for 16 to 18 months. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has described Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey Chambertin Coeur Roy as ‘the richest and most muscular of Dugat-Py's communal bottlings’.
