Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Les Goulots, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Les Goulots, Burgundy
Les Goulots is a small Premier Cru climat located at the northern end of the Gevrey-Chambertin vineyard. It is one of the most elevated sites in the Côte de Nuits and is planted entirely with Pinot Noir. As shade comes to the vineyard much earlier in the day than in the south-facing vineyards directly west of the Gevrey-Chambertin village, the climate here tends to be much cooler. The vineyard is quite stony, though the soil does contain high levels of clay beneath the topsoil, leading to good drainage, with abundant reserves of water deep below ground. This promotes deep vine rooting, resulting in high quality grapes with good concentration. The wine from this vineyard is noted as being more full-bodied and slightly less nuanced than a typical example from the region’s Grand Cru climats.
