An introduction to Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieille Vigne, Burgundy

Of all the villages of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, few evoke more magic or prestige than the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The village, one of the largest in the Côte d’Or, earns its name from its most famous vineyard, the Grand Cru Chambertin. In amongst the vineyards of the region are more Grand Crus than in any other village of Burgundy. Located in the north of the Côte de Nuits, wines of Gevrey-Chambertin in the classical style tend to be more robust in body, deeper in colour and more tightly wound in their youth than other reds from Burgundy, with well-produced examples capable of lasting decades in the bottle, softening and improving throughout the years. The Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from three hectares of vines in the Champerrier parcel to the north, with vine age over 60 years. The wine displays a notable complexity for a Gevrey-Chambertin, with a silky texture, tannic backbone, and the typical Gevrey structure to develop well in the bottle.

Understanding Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieille Vigne, Burgundy

An unfined, unfiltered, 100% Pinot Noir, this Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is matured for up to 20 months in old oak barrels. The maximum age of some of the vines used for this wine is 94 years, dating back to Jean-Marie Fourrier’s grandfather. This parcel is on the northernmost side of Gevrey-Chambertin, a location that tends to produce wines of more tannic backbone and overall structure. Displaying notable complexity for a villages-level Gevrey, this offers ripe black-cherry fruit and a beautifully silken texture, yet with an underlying mineral thrust and plenty of structure to evolve well in bottle.
