An introduction to Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin, Aux Echezeaux Vieille Vigne, Burgundy

Gevrey-Chambertin is one of Burgundy’s most renowned villages, home to an impressive nine Grand Cru vineyards, and twenty-six Premier Cru climats. The village, one of the largest in the Côte d’Or, earns its name from its most famous vineyard, the Grand Cru Chambertin. Located in the north of the Côte de Nuits, wines of Gevrey-Chambertin in the classical style tend to be more robust in body, deeper in colour and more tightly wound in their youth than other reds from Burgundy, which lends itself to excellent ageing potential in the best examples from the region. Domaine Fourrier owns half a hectare of vines in the Aux Echezeaux parcel in southern Gevrey directly on the border with Morey-Saint-Denis. The vines here have been planted between 1928 and 1955. Owing to the Aux Echezeaux terroir, the wine tends to be more elegant and silkier than typical Gevrey village wines.

Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieilles Vignes is made from 100% Pinot Noir, grown on a small area of the Aux Echezeaux parcel in southern Gevrey-Chambertin. In the characteristic fashion of the domaine, the vines are between 67 and 95 years old. The reduced vigour is credited for the intensity of flavour and the unique reflection of the terroir in the wines. Maturation occurs over a period of 18-20 months in old oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered in the pursuit of purity of fruit.
