An introduction to Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Combe au Moine Vieille Vigne, Burgundy
La Combe Aux Moine is a Premier Cru climat in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of Côte de Nuits. Sitting nearly 400 metres above sea level, it is one of the most elevated vineyards in Burgundy. The soils sit upon a limestone base, although within the Combe aux Moines vineyard they are quite rocky, with the free-draining nature leading to reduced fertility and subsequently, less vigour. This results in small, concentrated berries, producing wines of intense flavour complexity. The wines are also widely praised by critics for their structure, bright red fruit and earthy character.

Understanding Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Combe au Moine Vieille Vigne, Burgundy
Domaine Fourrier’s Combe Aux Moines Vieilles Vignes comes from vines planted in 1928 on a parcel just under 1 hectare in La Combe Aux Moines, atop the hill overlooking the village. The old vines and the nature of the soil mean that yields are extremely limited. Following the 3-week fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures in old oak barrels for a period of 18-20 months. The resulting wine exhibits a broodiness, darker and more visceral than typical examples for the region, with deep black fruits, and notable earthiness and spice. The wine has garnered universal critical acclaim, with the 2018 vintage being a recent highly scored example, achieving 97-points from Tim Atkin MW.
