An introduction to Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jacques Vieille Vigne, Burgundy

In his seminal work on Burgundy, Robert Parker wrote that, amongst other notable Premier Crus, the climat of Clos Saint-Jacques often equalled the Grand Crus in quality, even if such parity was not reflected in price or prestige. Occupying just under 7 hectares, the Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard is located on southeast-facing slopes to the west of Gevrey-Chambertin village. The soils of Clos Saint-Jacques mimic those of the renowned Le Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard in their composition. Rocky and rich in limestone, the structure of the soil and porous nature of the underlying rock ensure that vines receive sufficient hydration, whilst diverting and draining the excess, with the roots of vines forced to develop deep systems to seek the freely draining water, resulting in smaller yields, with a greater depth and concentration of flavour to the fruit produced.

Understanding Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jacques Vieille Vigne, Burgundy

Made from vines planted in 1910, the Domaine Fourrier Clos Saint-Jacques Vielles Vignes is a 100% Pinot Noir. The grapes for this wine are usually harvested between late September and early October. This wine from Domaine Fourrier has received widespread acclaim from critics, with Jancis Robinson MW awarding the 2011 vintage a near perfect 19.5/20 points.
