An introduction to Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jacques Cuvee Centenaire, Burgundy

The Premier Cru climat of Clos Saint-Jacques is often regarded as one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s finest, and, alongside neighbour Les Cazetiers, worthy of Grand Cru status. This is due to the high quality of the full-bodied, fragrant red wines produced here. The vines in Clos Saint-Jacques receive sufficient sunlight to achieve phenolic ripeness, though the process is slowed somewhat by a cooling wind, which often means that the vines here are harvested later than those from the Grand Cru vineyards. Adding to Clos Saint-Jacques' advantageous exposure is its high-quality white marl soils, with the vines obtaining adequate hydration, whilst being well-drained to avoid saturation. The free-draining nature of the soil sees the development of deep root systems, resulting in smaller, more concentrated berries, and lower yields.

Understanding Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jacques Cuvee Centenaire, Burgundy

Domaine Fourrier Clos Saint-Jacques Cuvée Centenaire is made of 100% Pinot Noir, with vines used in the production of this wine being at least 30 years old, with some under the purview of the domaine dating back to 1928. The age of the vines limits the yield, increasing the intensity of the flavour, which is further amplified by maturation in old oak barrels, and the lack of fining and filtration. The Clos Saint-Jacques Cuvée Centenaire is amongst the most critically lauded of the wines of Domaine Fourrier, with Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate), awarding the 2014 vintage a score of 96-98/100, noting its impressive longevity.
