An introduction to Domaine Michel Mallard, Corton Grand Cru, Le Rognet et Corton, Burgundy

Corton Le Rognet et Corton is a lieu-dit of the Corton Grand Cru within the commune of Ladoix-Serrigny in the Côte de Beaune, bordering Aloxe-Corton to the east. Michel Mallard is the largest owner here, with 45-50-year-old parcels of Pinot Noir totalling 1.27ha, located at the base of Le Rognet across from les Grandes Lolières at the northern end of the appellation close to Les Carrières. The well-aerated clay-limestone soils imbue the wines with a minerally character that balances the spicy fruit. The recommended cellaring for these wines is at least five years, but they will reward extended aging for up to 20 years.

Understanding Domaine Michel Mallard, Corton Grand Cru, Le Rognet et Corton, Burgundy

Michel Mallard prefers a more natural approach in the vineyards and the cellar. After hand-harvesting, the grapes macerate for up to a week prior to fermentation. Like the rest of the domaine’s wines, a proportion of whole bunch fruit is used in fermentation, with gentle pumping over at the end to adjust the tannins. Using a percentage of press wine, the cuvée is assembled and aged between 16 and 18 months in 228 litre Burgundian tuns (70-80% new). These are complex, focused wines with the structure to age for many years. William Kelly writing for the Wine Advocate described the 2017 vintage as ‘seamless and charming, with terrific depth at the core and melting structuring tannins’.
