An introduction to Domaine Michel Gaunoux, Corton Grand Cru, Les Renardes, Burgundy
The Corton Grand Cru Les Renardes by Domaine Michel Gaunoux is sourced from a small 0.63-hectare plot of Pinot Noir vines in the Les Renardes lieu-dit of the Corton Grand Cru appellation. The Les Renardes vineyard is situated on the eastern flank of the Montagne de Corton, benefitting from the joint effects of a steep gradient and easterly aspect. This cuvée by Domaine Michel Gaunous shows all the hallmarks of the famous appellation, with a rich, fruit core of plums and blackcurrant enhanced by notes of game and sous-bois, supported in the mouth by the characteristic tannic grip of the Montagne.

Understanding Domaine Michel Gaunoux, Corton Grand Cru, Les Renardes, Burgundy
The old vines that comprise the Corton Grand Cru cuvée are farmed sustainably with mostly organic viticultural practices. Picking dates are typically quite late at the domaine, allowing time for the grapes to develop ripe fruit qualities and phenolic complexity. When harvest begins, the grapes are hand-picked and 100% destemmed into wooden fermentation vats, where alcoholic fermentation occurs for approximately three weeks. After a gentle pressing, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels, of which 15% are new, and maturation is conducted for 14 months prior to bottling. The result is a wine that is a standout among the domaine’s portfolio, famous for its ability to evolve over several decades into a profound expression of Corton Grand Cru, with layers of richness and complexity and enduring gourmande appeal.
