Le Clos du Roi is a highly-esteemed climat found in the Corton Grand Cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune subregion of eastern France’s famous Burgundy wine region. This walled vineyard covers just under 11 hectares of vines mostly planted to Pinot Noir with about 5% dedicated to Chardonnay. Many top Burgundy wine producers own plots in this site. Its name translates as “The King’s Walled Vineyard” and it received its Grand Cru designation in 1936. Classic Corton Clos du Roi is richly fruity and relatively tannic with floral and earthy notes. The Domaine Louis Latour Corton Clos Roi displays complex layers of cherry, liquorice and mocha in a fresh, rounded palate with silky tannins, delicate hints of toast and an impressive finish. James Suckling gave the 2020 vintage of this Grand Cru 96 points. This Burgundy can lay down for ten to 15 years.

Supporting the domaine’s sensitivity to the environment, it farms its Pinot Noir in Clos du Roi on marl-limestone soils. The site’s southeasterly aspect benefits the fruit with gentle, steady sunlight for gradual, balanced ripening and finessed wine. To preserve the quality of the fruit, a highly selective manual harvest ensures that only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Grand Cru sees traditional open-vat fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a soft, textured mouthfeel. It is aged in 25% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for ten to 12 months to allow components to expand for greater depth and complexity.
