Domaine de Montille, Corton Grand Cru, Le Clos du Roi, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine de Montille, Corton Grand Cru, Le Clos du Roi, Burgundy
The Grand Cru Clos du Roi by Domaine de Montille is sourced from a 0.84 hectare plot of Pinot Noir vines planted in the Grand Cru designated Clos du Roi vineyard, on the mid-slope of the eastern side of the famous Montagne des Corton. This is one of the only Grand Cru red wine appellations in the Côte de Beaune and the Domaine de Montille parcel is situated squarely on the south-easterly facing mid-slope of the climat, just above the path between Clos du Roi and Grand Cru Les Bressandes. It is a powerful wine typical of its commanding aspect and impeccable terroir, showing an effusive perfume of cassis and sous-bois notes with the plushness and density on the palate characteristic of only the very best Pinots of the Côte de Beaune.

Understanding Domaine de Montille, Corton Grand Cru, Le Clos du Roi, Burgundy
The old vines that comprise the Domaine de Montille holdings in the Grand Cru Clos du Roi vineyard are farmed sustainably and in accordance with biodynamic principles. Much of the viticultural work is conducted by hand and timed to coincide with the most effective phase of the lunar calendar. The grapes are picked relatively early to retain acidity and are hand-harvested and partially destemmed into wooden fermenters. A portion of stems and whole bunches are retained to add freshness of tannin and aromatic intensity. After a fermentation of approximately three weeks the wine is matured in French oak barrels, of which approximately 30% are new, before bottling with a non-sterile filtration. The result is a wine showing impeccable structure and great presence in the mouth, with the ripe fruit notes and supple tannins so typical of the Grand Cru wines of Corton. This should cellar well for several decades under the right conditions.
