An introduction to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy

Famous for producing some of the world’s most expensive white wines, the Grand Cru appellation of Corton-Charlemagne includes multiple individual vineyard climats within the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses, covering most of the circular Montagne de Corton hilltop. While the Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne previously married fruit from both the Pernand- and Aloxe-side, today all the fruit comes from the climat of Les Languettes in Aloxe-Corton. Quite classic in style, rich and creamy with ripe fruit, racy acidity and a notable flinty minerality, his Corton-Charlemagne wines are suitable for extended ageing of over fifteen years.

Understanding Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy

This Chardonnay is produced from purchased grapes that the team at Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey harvest themselves, from a specific parcel of 50-year-old vines, planted at the top of the hill in Les Languettes. Choosing to pick the fruit slightly later, and fermenting naturally in 350-litre oak barrels (30% new oak), combined with long élevage of up to 18 months without bâtonnage, fining or filtration before bottling, ensures the wine retains its trademark precision and power. According to Tim Atkin MW, the 2017 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne Blanc Grand Cru has ‘a winning combination of power, concentration and pithy minerality’.
