An introduction to Philippe Pacalet, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy

The Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne by Philippe Pacalet is sourced from a small plot of Chardonnay vines in the Grand Cru classified En Charlemagne vineyard, located on the south-west slopes of the Montagne de Corton. The famous calcareous soils of this vineyard and particularly steep gradient yield Chardonnay of a rare finesse, and all of the hallmarks of the famous terroir can be found in this bottling by Philippe Pacalet. There is great richness on the nose, with notes of pear, beeswax and hay, combined in the mouth with a full and ample palate and enduring persistence on the finish.

Understanding Philippe Pacalet, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy

The Philippe Pacalet Corton-Charlemagne is sourced from a parcel of vines on average 66 years old. They are farmed organically without herbicides or pesticides, and the majority of the viticultural work is carried out by hand. After hand-picking, the grapes are whole bunch pressed and the juice fermented in mostly neutral French oak barrels with native yeast. The subsequent elevage is conducted without the addition of sulphur dioxide and with maximum lees-contact to promote texture and mouthfeel. Bottled without filtration, the wine is a pure expression of the Corton-Charlemagne terroir; exuberant and generous in the mouth, it retains enough tension to mature beautifully over 15 years or more of careful cellaring.
