An introduction to Benjamin Leroux, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy

The Benjamin Leroux Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is sourced from a 0.2-hectare plot of Chardonnay vines planted in the Les Languettes lieu-dit of the Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne vineyard. The limestone-marl soils of this section of the appellation are perfectly suited to quality Chardonnay production, yielding grapes of rich fruit flavour and the hallmark minerality so typical of this terroir. This example by Benjamin Leroux shows freshness and vibrancy on the palate, with great intensity of fruit promoted by the site’s south-easterly aspect and elevation.

Understanding Benjamin Leroux, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Burgundy

The vines for the Corton-Charlemagne cuvée by Benjamin Leroux were planted in the 1980s and are farmed sustainably. After hand-picking, the grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented with ambient yeast in French oak barrels (33% are new). Following fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is matured for approximately 18 months. The wine shows great textural weight on the palate, with honey and baked pear notes so typical of the Charlemagne vineyards supported by a judicious touch of French oak. This is a wine to enjoy in its middle-age, after careful cellaring for 7-12 years.
