Maison Roche de Bellene, Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, Burgundy
An introduction to Maison Roche de Bellene, Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, Burgundy
Planted entirely with Pinot Noir, Clos Saint-Denis is a Grand Cru within the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation in the Côte de Nuits. The Cru is located mid-slope immediately to the north of the Morey-Saint-Denis village, where the rocky soils are rich in limestone with a good proportion of clay, resulting in wines of great finesse. With a network of growers across Burgundy’s best sites, Maison Roche de Bellene decides which parcels to use in each vintage, sometimes selecting fruit from more than one plot. The emphasis is on sustainable and organic farming, and the fruit, or base wine always come from old vines. These were planted on south-east facing clay-limestone soils at an elevation of 290m. The Production of Maison Roche de Bellene Clos Saint-Denis is very limited and often less than 700 bottles.

Understanding Maison Roche de Bellene, Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, Burgundy
This Clos Saint-Denis wine is made from hand-harvested and carefully selected Pinot Noir grapes. The cuvée uses a proportion of whole bunch fruit during the indigenous yeast fermentation and spends up to 18 months in oak barrel (75% to 100% new oak). Usually bottled filtered but unfined (vintage dependant), the wine is highly perfumed with exotic spices, pretty florals, and a dark fruit profile. This Clos Saint-Denis is a textural, pretty wine that needs a few years in the cellar before approaching, with the potential to age for more than 15 years.
