An introduction to Maison Louis Latour, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy

Domaine Marchand-Towse Clos de Vougeot comes from one of the world’s most esteemed Grand Cru appellations, found in the Côte d'Or area of eastern France’s Burgundy region: the prestigious namesake Clos Vougeot climat. This acclaimed site, planted entirely to Pinot Noir, gained its Grand Cru classification in 1937. Clos Vougeot is the largest in the Côte de Nuits. This acclaimed vineyard is subdivided into around 100 parcels with more than 80 owners claiming a spot across its 50 hectares. As such, wine styles and quality vary. The Domaine Louis Latour Clos de Vougeot displays layers of rich, spicy blackcurrant with floral tones in a full, fresh, rounded palate with silky tannins and hints of toast closing to a long, pleasing finish. This Grand Cru regularly receives scores in the high 90s. James Suckling gave the 2020 vintage 97 points. This Clos de Vougeot is ideal for 15 to 20 years of laying down.

Understanding Maison Louis Latour, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy

Supporting the domaine’s sensitivity to the environment, it farms its old-vine Pinot Noir in Clos de Vougeot sustainably on chalky, clay-gravel slopes. Its east-facing aspect benefits the fruit with gentle, steady sunlight for gradual, balanced ripening and finessed wine. To preserve the quality of the fruit, a highly selective manual harvest ensures that only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Grand Cru sees traditional fermentation in traditional open vats followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a soft, textured mouthfeel. It is aged in 100% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for ten to 12 months to allow components to deepen for increased complexity.
