Domaine Ponsot, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine Ponsot, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
The Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot comes from a plot of Pinot Noir vines with an average age of fifty years, planted on the better upper slopes of this centuries old Grand Cru vineyard situated just south of the village of Vougeot. The easterly aspect of the upper hill and the free-draining limestone soils produce grapes of good balance, with ripe phenolic character and fresh acidity. The old vine cuvée from Domaine Ponsot is a classic example of this equilibrium, with rich fruit supported by a fine tannic framework.

Understanding Domaine Ponsot, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
The old vines of the Domaine Ponsot Clos de Vougeot are farmed using a combination of organic and biodynamic methods. As is the custom of the domaine, harvest is usually conducted late to ensure good fruit concentration, and the grapes are hand-picked and destemmed prior to fermentation with native yeasts. After fermentation, the wines are racked without sulphur dioxide into neutral French oak barrels (all over twenty years old) for an élevage of sixteen months. The Ponsot Clos de Vougeot Vielles Vignes wine shows bold fruit concentration with notes of dark cherry and sous-bois, supported by grippy tannins and a fresh acidity that will support the wine’s development for at least two decades.
