Domaine de Montille, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine de Montille, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy
The Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot by Domaine de Montille comes from a tiny 0.29 hectare plot of Pinot Noir vines planted in the Dix Journaux lieu-dit of the Grand Cru designated Clos de Vougeot vineyard. The upper-mid-slope location of the Dix Journaux lieu-dit means that the site has excellent drainage, and benefits from the south-easterly aspect of the salient that rises in this part of the vineyard. This cuvée by Domaine de Montille shows all the grandness of a classic Clos de Vougeot wine, offering a nose of sapid dark fruits and cocoa and a plush and mouthfilling palate.

Understanding Domaine de Montille, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy
The old vines that comprise the Domaine de Montille holdings in the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot vineyard are farmed sustainably and in accordance with biodynamic principles, without recourse to chemical inputs in either the vineyard or the cellar. The grapes are hand-picked and mostly destemmed prior to alcoholic fermentation in large wooden vats (though some whole bunches are included to add aromatic complexity and adjust the tannic profile) and extraction is managed by both extended maceration times and pigeage that occurs twice a day. Subsequent élevage is conducted in French oak barrels, of which approximately 30% are new, before bottling with a non-sterile filtration. This is a powerful and sophisticated wine from Domaine de Montille and one of the top cuvées of their portfolio every vintage. It offers the opulence so characteristic of the better wines of the Clos with some of the finesse and length more typical of neighbouring Musigny. This is a wine not to be missed, and it will evolve in the cellar comfortably for several decades.
