An introduction to Alain Hudelot-Noellat, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy

Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos de Vougeot hails from one of the world’s most iconic wine Grand Cru vineyards, located in the Côte-d'Or area of eastern France’s Burgundy region: the prestigious Clos Vougeot. This acclaimed climat, planted entirely with Pinot Noir, gained its Grand Cru status in 1937. Clos Vougeot is the largest single vineyard in the Côte de Nuits. This acclaimed vineyard is subdivided into around 100 parcels with more than 80 owners claiming a plot across its 50 hectares. As such, wine styles and quality vary. The Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat label crafts an expression that often garners 95+ points from international wine critics. For instance, Tim Atkin MW gave the 2014 vintage 97-points while Jasper Morris MW has awarded the 2017, 2018 and 2019 wines 95-, 96- and 98-points respectively. An old-vine Burgundy, this Pinot Noir displays layers of dense dark fruit, floral and mineral notes and a spicy, muscular elegance. Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos de Vougeot can age for up to 30 years.

Understanding Alain Hudelot-Noellat, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Burgundy

Clos Vougeot’s historic timeline goes all the way back to 1110 AD and the site has retained the purity of its unique identity for centuries. Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat cultivates two parcels of vines in this vineyard with holdings totaling just under three-quarters of a hectare. These lieux-dits, named Chiores and Garenne, are found at the top of Clos Vougeot. It is a varied terroir, with an advantageous east-facing aspect and nourishing limestone, clay, and gravel soils for the domaine’s 60-year-old Pinot Noir vines. This Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot is produced from a mix of destemmed and whole bunches, fermented with ambient yeast, which adds unique notes to each vintage. Careful punching down is done to stimulate gentle colour and flavour extraction. Ageing for 16 months in 50% new oak adds spice and structure to the wine. This Clos Vougeot is not fined or filtered, resulting in a rich and characterful Burgundy. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate describes it as ‘a terrific success’.
