An introduction to Louis Latour, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Morgeot Blanc, Burgundy

At 58 hectares, Morgeot is the largest Premier Cru vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet, the prestigious Côte de Beaune appellation in eastern France’s iconic Burgundy wine region. The vineyard encompasses about 20 Premier Cru climats. Of the 55 Premier Cru vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet, Morgeot is one of the better known. As the terroir is suited to red wine production most of its area is planted with Pinot Noir, although some of the more elevated plots are suitable for the cultivation of high-quality white grapes. The Domaine Louis Latour Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Blanc boasts ample stone fruit and hints of toasted bread and hazelnut in a round, balanced mouth, closing to a long and intense finish. This Morgeot is suitable for five to seven years of cellaring.

Understanding Louis Latour, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Morgeot Blanc, Burgundy

The domaine cultivates old Chardonnay vines using sustainable viticultural methods on the chalk and clay soils found mid-slope. Good southeasterly exposure ensures prolonged sunlight for steady and complete grape ripening. Fruit is carefully harvested by hand in a highly-selective process that ensures only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Premier Cru sees traditional fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a creamy, soft mouthfeel. It is aged in 50% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for eight to ten months to allow components to unfurl for greater depth and complexity.
