Clos Saint-Jean is a Premier Cru climat covering 14 hectares, located above the village of Chassagne, just beneath a large limestone quarry. The vineyard contains an east-facing lieux dit on the Côte d'Or midslope measuring 5 hectares, but its wider site is considered to also include the two hectare site of Chassagne du Clos Saint-Jean along the same slope to the south, and Les Rebichets and Les Murées below, adding another seven hectares between them. This soil is pebbly and chalky, with red clay and limestone fragments in the topsoil. The vineyard is generally known for its Pinot Noir, however, the terroir is also well suited for the production of Chardonnay. The domaine’s 20-year-old vines cover a surface area of less than 0.4 hectares.

Understanding Jean-Marc Blain-Gagnard, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jean Blanc, Burgundy
This Clos Saint-Jean is produced from sustainably farmed Chardonnay grapes, which are fermented and aged for 11 months in oak barrels with up to 30% new Allier oak. The ageing in Burgundian pièce brings out notes of vanilla and toast. The wine undergoes weekly battonage for the first few months. It displays a generously fruity bouquet, with ripe white peach and clementine delivered in a strong perfume. The palate is wonderfully defined, with a deep yet supple texture, and pleasing hints of hazelnut from the controlled oak influence.
