An introduction to Jean-Marc Blain-Gagnard, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Cailleret, Burgundy

Les Caillerets sits above Morgeot and Champs Gain, where there is a visible break in the hillside, and due to an extremely shallow topsoil, typically produces lean, more austere wines defined by their minerality and finesse. The domaine’s vines were planted in between 1954 and 1987 over a steep terroir of stony, chalky limestone. ‘Caillerets’ means pebbles or stones, and the abundance of them in the composition of the soil is ideal for the production of first-class Chardonnay.

Understanding Jean-Marc Blain-Gagnard, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Cailleret, Burgundy

Produced from sustainably farmed Chardonnay grapes, the wine is fermented and aged for 11 months in oak barrels with up to 30% new Alliers oak, with weekly battonage for the first few months, and longer still in some vintages. The complex bouquet melds white stone fruit and yellow apple with oyster shell and layered minerality. The palate is wonderfully fresh, stony and chiselled, and the oak is well integrated, adding a hint of spice to the finish.
