An introduction to Francois Carillon, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Macherelles Blanc, Burgundy
Located just north of Chassagne-Montrachet, this east-facing vineyard sits at the heart of the Côte de Beaune and is one of several Premier Cru sites worked upon by the formidable Domaine François Carillon. The vines are grown from plots planted in 2003, when pinot noir vines were replaced; one plot is over 50 years old. The limestone soils here are renowned for the minerality they bring to the wines, with most vintages aging exceptionally well for 10+ years. The terroir is similar to Les Perrières, a Puligny Montrachet Premier Cru site the Domaine also operates on. These wines are examples of rich and distinctive Chardonnay; textured and flinty on the nose, they possess an endearing saline quality.

Domaine François Carillon Chassagne-Montrachet Macherelles Blanc is made from manually harvested Chardonnay grapes, farmed using a mixture of organic, biodynamic and non-traditional methods. The wine is bottled only in certain lunar periods. In brims with the minerality, typical of Chassange-Montrachet’s greatest Premier Cru sites. It has a classic Burgundian buttery profile, with fine finishes and a delicious salty edge emerging from the limestone and rock-heavy terroir of the vineyard.
