Francois Carillon, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jean Blanc, Burgundy
An introduction to Francois Carillon, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jean Blanc, Burgundy
One of the highest altitude sites in Chassange-Montrachet, Le Clos Saint-Jean is a Premier Cru vineyard covering just under five hectares. It is located to the north of Chassange-Montrachet on a hillside above the village and is planted with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Le Clos Saint-Jean is one of two Premier Cru sites in Chassagne-Montrachet producing grapes that go into the wines of Domaine François Carillon, and by the domaine’s standards relatively young, having been replanted in 2004. The limestone and clay soils result in wines that embody the “generous [and] gourmand” (The Wine Advocate) style of Domaine François Carillon.

Understanding Francois Carillon, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Clos Saint-Jean Blanc, Burgundy
Made using Chardonnay grapes farmed to lutte intégrée principals (organically, but with the option to treat conventionally in extreme circumstances), this Clos Saint-Jean Blanc is a fruit forward wine revealing notes of green melon on the nose, and expressive fruit flavours on the palate. Like wines from the domaine’s other Premier Cru site in Chassagne-Montrachet (Les Macherelles), the wine has a saline quality that stems from the vineyard’s limestone base.
