An introduction to Bruno Colin, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Morgeot, Burgundy

Morgeot is cumulatively the largest Premier Cru vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet, encompassing a large number of other Premier Cru climats at the southern end of the appellation. The vineyards lie on the lower slopes of the Côte d'Or. The vineyard is planted with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties. The terroir of Morgeot is generally held to be more suited to red wine, as the soils here feature a heavier clay-gravel mix than the climats further up the hill. Based on Bathonian limestone, the souls are free-draining, encouraging deeper rooting for the vines as they seek to access water deeper in the ground. Owing to its location at the base of the escarpment, the vineyard is not as affected by cooler night temperatures as higher up the hill.

Understanding Bruno Colin, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Morgeot, Burgundy

A 100% Chardonnay, the Domaine Bruno Colin Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Blanc is made from grapes from the Francemont parcel of Morgeot. The vines were planted in 1963 in the clay-limestone soils characteristic of the region. The domaine has implemented sustainable winemaking practices, with manual harvest followed by selective sorting in the vineyards, pneumatic pressing and settling. The wine undergoes fermentation on fine lees in oak barrels with 20 to 25% new oak. It spends 12 months in oak barrels prior to racking and blending in stainless steel vats for 3 to 6 months. Characterized by its finesse, this wine is quite reserved in its youth. It develops a mineral structure and powerful, round palate after a few years in the bottle. This is a full and rich Morgeot Blanc, with plenty of freshness and a long, lingering finish.
