The Tête du Clos Premier Cru bottling by Benjamin Leroux is sourced from a 0.4-hectare plot of Chardonnay vines in the Tête du Clos vineyard just south of the village of Chassagne-Montrachet. The easterly aspect of the vineyard and free-draining soils produce grapes of good phenolic character that with considerate vinification can make textbook examples of white Burgundy. This example from Benjamin Leroux shows all the verve one would expect from Premier Cru Chassagne-Montrachet, with a subtle minerality and notes of pear and whitecurrant.

Benjamin Leroux’s plot in the Tête du Clos vineyard consists of vines that were planted in 1955, producing small clusters of intensely flavoured berries. The fruit is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed to French oak barrels, of which 20-25% are new. Elevage with full malolactic fermentation is conducted for 18 months following fermentation with ambient yeast. This is a wine with length and freshness enough to age well for a decade or more, with the vibrant, temperate fruitiness of youth evolving into something richer and more opulent with time.
