An introduction to Perrot-Minot, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the largest yet lesser-known of Gevrey-Chambertin's Grand Cru sites, situated below Chambertin on north-east facing slopes. The soils are shallow and stony, and the resulting wines are often lighter in style than many of the Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. Perrot-Minot’s 0.8 ha plot is well-located, close to the border with Chambertin on thin marly soils with fractured bedrock in places which encourage deep rooting. The low yielding old vines produce wines with incredible concentration and richness, not always found in wines from this Cru. Approachable after a few years in bottle, Domaine Perrot-Minot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru will reward extended cellaring for 15+ years.

Understanding Perrot-Minot, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy

Made from the region’s signature Pinot Noir, the fruit here is hand-harvested to ensure the removal of all under-ripe grapes. With a proportion of whole bunch fruit used in the fermentation, gentle pump-overs, using only the free-run juice, the wine spends up to 18 months in barrel. The aim is to accentuate its finesse and elegance, without masking the purity of fruit, which is achieved through the sensitive use of new oak (30%). Perrot-Minot makes approximately 3,500 bottles of this critically lauded wine, with many of its vintages regularly achieving 95 points or above from major publications. For instance, the Wine Advocate wrote of the 2016: ‘This is a superb Charmes-Chambertin from Christophe Perrot-Minot’.
