Maison Roche de Bellene, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy

Maison Roche de Bellene, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy
An introduction to Maison Roche de Bellene, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the largest yet lesser-known of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Grand Cru sites, situated below Chambertin on north-east facing slopes. The soils are shallow and stony, and the resulting wines are often lighter in style than many of the Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. With a network of growers across Burgundy’s best sites, Maison Roche de Bellene decide which specific parcels to use in each vintage, sometimes selecting fruit from more than one plot. With an emphasis on sustainable and organic farming, the fruit, or base wine come from old vines, planted on east facing clay-limestone soils at an elevation of 240m. The Production of Maison Roche de Bellene Charmes-Chambertin is limited and often less than 1,000 bottles.

Understanding Maison Roche de Bellene, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy
Made from the region’s signature Pinot Noir grape, the wine is produced from hand-harvested fruit. The cuvée uses a proportion of whole bunches during the indigenous yeast fermentation and spends up to 18 months in 100% new oak barrels. Usually bottled filtered but unfined, depending on the vintage, this Charmes-Chambertin is an expressive wine, with red fruit and forest floor notes. The wine will age beautifully for over 15 years, giving the firmly structured tannins time to evolve. The Wine Enthusiast called the 2019 vintage a ‘supple, piercing expression of Gevrey-Chambertin's most charming, endearing grand cru’.
