An introduction to Domaine Ponsot, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cuvee des Merles, Burgundy
The Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin Cuvée des Merles is sourced from a small parcel of Pinot Noir vines on the southern edge of the Charmes-Chambertin climat bordering the Grand Cru Mazoyeres-Chambertin vineyard. The Ponsot family has been farming here since the late nineteenth century, and today practices a mixture of organic and biodynamic methods. The north-east aspect of the hillside reduces sunshine hours and yields wines that are typically fresher and more delicate than those of the neighbouring Grand Cru appellations. The Domaine Ponsot Cuvée des Merles is exemplar of its terroir, showing an expressive nose of red fruit character and vibrant acidity on the palate.

Understanding Domaine Ponsot, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cuvee des Merles, Burgundy
The Cuvée des Merles is sourced from a parcel of Grand Cru vines, between 25-40 years old, planted on well-draining limestone marl soils. The grapes are hand-picked and destemmed into old oak fermentation vats, and fermentation is conducted with ambient yeast strains. Élevage is conducted in used French oak barrels for 14-16 months, all of which are older than 25 years. The result is a terroir-driven wine that shows great delicacy and freshness, and could either be drunk and enjoyed in its youth or matured under careful cellar conditions for a decade or more.
