An introduction to Christophe Roumier, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Les Mazoyeres, Burgundy

This Aux Mazoyéres cuvée by Domaine Georges Roumier is sourced from a small plot of Pinot Noir vines located in the Aux Mazoyéres lieu-dit of the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin vineyard. The vineyard is situated in the lower portion of the climat, facing gently north-east with pebbly topsoil over limestone. The slight northerly aspect of the site means that the grapes retain a fresher, more mineral character. As a result, wines from Aux Mazoyéres convey a degree of elegance not reflected in those produced further up the slope. This interpretation by Roumier is a fine example of this poised, almost ethereal clarity, showing bright fruit flavours and a touch of violets, supported by supple, fine-grained tannins.

Understanding Christophe Roumier, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Les Mazoyeres, Burgundy

The Roumier holdings in the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin vineyard are farmed sustainably, with a focus on organic principles and with much of the viticultural work carried out by hand. The grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed prior to fermentation in wooden vats with indigenous yeast strains. Total maceration time lasts for about three weeks, before the wine is gently pressed to French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which are new. The wine is matured between 14-16 months and bottled with minimal filtration. The result is a stunning Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin, showing the effusive red fruit and spice characters so typical of the appellation, with a generous mouthfeel and fresh, vibrant acidity. This is one for the cellar, sure to improve for several decades with the right storage conditions.
