An introduction to Perrot-Minot, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

Situated at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, Chappelle-Chambertin is a Grand Cru vineyard within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation producing red wines made from Pinot Noir. One of the smaller and lesser known Grand Crus in the appellation, it is one of the sunniest areas of Gevrey-Chambertin, situated on permeable, rocky limestone soils. The Perrot-Minot Chappelle-Chambertin hails from two of the three old-vine plots owned by a vigneron in Gevrey-Chambertin who also supplies the fruit for Perrot-Minot’s Chambertin and Clos de Bèze. Intensely aromatic, spicy, darkly fruited wines with an overt smoky minerality, these wines are approachable after a few years in bottle but also reward extended ageing of 10-15+ years.

Understanding Perrot-Minot, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy

Made from the region’s signature Pinot Noir grape, the fruit for this cuvee comes from two-old vine sites that are picked as late as possible to ensure full ripeness is achieved. With extraction limited to a gentle pump-over, and using only the free-run juice, the extended élevage of up to 18 months and sensitive use of new oak (20%) before bottling unfined and unfiltered result in wines that reflect their terroir. Production of Domaine Perrot-Minot’s Chappelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is extremely limited, under 1,500 bottles per vintage. The wine scores highly among major critics. According to The Wine Advocate, ‘the darling of the Francophone wine press, Christophe Perrot-Minot, continues his evolution in the direction of textural finesse and aromatic range’.
