Perrot-Minot, Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
An introduction to Perrot-Minot, Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
Le Chambertin has the status of being Gevrey-Chambertin’s most prestigious and important Grand Cru, planted exclusively with Pinot Noir. Perrot-Minot’s parcel of old vines over 50 years of age is located on an east-facing, gently sloping hill near the southern end of Chambertin, close to the Clos de Bèze. The limestone soils and the exposure of this site to cooling winds, gives these wines a unique textural quality alongside undeniable muscular power that rewards extended cellaring of 15 to 20 years.

Understanding Perrot-Minot, Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
Low yielding vines are harvested entirely by hand to ensure the removal of under-ripe grapes. Using a proportion of whole bunch fruit in the fermentation, eschewing punch-downs in favour of gentler pump-overs, using only free-run juice, and ageing for up to 18 months in barrel, the aim is to accentuate the finesse and elegance of the wine without masking the pure fruit aromatics, which is achieved by the sensitive use of new oak (30%). Production is extremely limited, often numbering less than 1,500 bottles, and the wine represents a true rarity. It regularly achieves scores in the high 90s by major critics. The 2015 vintage, for instance, was rated 96-98 points by Vinous’ Antonio Galloni, who said that ‘this brilliant Chambertin is built for a very long life in bottle’.
