An introduction to Domaine Louis Latour, Chambertin Grand Cru, Cuvee Heritiers, Burgundy

Le Chambertin is the most prestigious Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, the renowned commune found in the Côte de Nuits in eastern France’s iconic Burgundy wine region. This appellation is admired for producing some of the world’s finest Burgundy. Napoleon Bonaparte would insist on drinking this Burgundy even during afar military operations. Chambertin is rivalled only by Romanée-Conti and Montrachet. The east-facing, 13.5-hectare vineyard is planted exclusively to Pinot Noir. The name “Chambertin” has been used since the 1200s and its boundaries have remained the same since the Medieval times. The appellation was established in 1937. The Domaine Louis Latour Chambertin “Cuvée Héritiers” displays deep, complex black cherry, raspberry and mint with floral hints in a full, velvety mouth with a good tannic structure and vibrant, balancing acidity. This Grand Cru is a routine recipient of 95+ scores from renowned critics. James Suckling gave the 2021 99 points and Wine Enthusiast awarded both the 2018 and 2019 scores of 97. This Chambertin is suitable for ten to 15 years of cellaring.

Understanding Domaine Louis Latour, Chambertin Grand Cru, Cuvee Heritiers, Burgundy

The domaine has been tending Pinot Noir on this site since the end of the 1800s when it acquired a four-fifth hectare in this iconic vineyard. Latour’s parcel extends from the top to the foot of the hillside close to the eminent La Latricières vineyards. The name "Cuvée Héritiers Latour", is a proprietary moniker showing how this parcel has passed through generations of Latours. The domaine tends its Chambertin Pinot Noir through sustainable agriculture methods. To preserve the quality of the fruit, a highly selective manual harvest ensures that only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Premier Cru sees traditional fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a creamy, soft mouthfeel. It is aged in 100% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for ten to 12 months for greater depth and complexity. James Suckling has said this Grand Cru “Makes you glad to be alive!”
