An introduction to Louis Carillon, Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Burgundy

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is situated at the northeastern corner of the wider Bâtard site, nearest to the village of Puligny-Montrachet itself. The wine was produced from 0.12 hectares of 55-year-old vines on a plot of low slopes, 240-250 meters above sea level, with a southern and south-western exposure. The Jurassic clay-limestone soils are rich in clay, typically producing wines of more concentration and power.

Understanding Louis Carillon, Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Burgundy

Made from sustainably grown Chardonnay grapes, the wine was fermented and aged in oak barrels with 20% new wood for one year, before being racked into stainless steel for further six months. It is lightly filtered before bottling. The wine’s generously expressive bouquet delivers aromas of pastry cream, lemon curd, white flowers and ripe peach. It is unctuous and textured on the palate, with an ample fruit core with an impressively delineated finish. According to The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, this wine is ‘an attractively gourmand Bienvenues.’
