An introduction to Domaine Louis Latour, Beaune Premier Cru, Les Vignes Franches, Burgundy

Les Vignes Franches is a highly-esteemed Premier Cru vineyard located in Beaune in the iconic eastern French wine region of Burgundy. Neighbouring the Pommard commune boundary, the majority of the 9.77-hectare vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir although a very small quantity of Chardonnay is also grown. Les Vignes Franches wines typically boast a similar opulence to those of adjacent Pommard with a pleasing fruit-forward profile. The Domaine Louis Latour Beaune Les Vignes Franches displays blackberry and cherry with notes of coffee, liquorice and tar in an elegant, well-built, vibrant mouth with firm yet restrained tannins. This Premier Cru routinely receives good scores from esteemed wine critics. James Suckling gave the 2020 vintage 97 points. This Burgundy is suited to seven to ten years of laying down.

Understanding Domaine Louis Latour, Beaune Premier Cru, Les Vignes Franches, Burgundy

Supporting the domaine’s sensitivity to the environment, it farms its Pinot Noir in Les Vignes Franches on clay and limestone soils. The site’s southeasterly aspect benefits the fruit with gentle, steady morning and afternoon sunlight for gradual, balanced ripening and finessed wine. To preserve the quality of the fruit, a highly selective manual harvest ensures that only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Premier Cru sees traditional open-vat fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a soft, textured mouthfeel. It is aged in 25% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for ten to 12 months to allow components to expand for greater depth and complexity.
