Located in the Saint-Romain Valley, Auxey-Duresses is a village in the Côte de Beaune producing wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This communal appellation produces no Grand Cru wines with only nine Premier Cru climates. With similarities to wines from nearby Meursault, the limestone rich soils produce Chardonnay wines of very good quality. The small plot of 0.31ha owned by Domaine d’Auvenay comes from the Les Clous vineyard. The limited yields result in highly concentrated berries, creating wines of real depth, notable for their remarkable minerality and long ageing potential for the best part of a decade. The production of Auxey Duresses Les Clous is limited and often less than 1,200 bottles.

Made from the region’s signature white grape Chardonnay, this wine is produced from hand-picked fruit from biodynamically farmed vines with a hands-off approach to winemaking. Whole bunch pressed and fermented using wild yeasts in wooden vats, the wine undergoes extended élevage on lees in 100% new oak barrels. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering, with the winemakers’ aim being to reveal the pure expression of its terroir. Charles Curtis MW has praised Domaine d’Auvenay Auxey Duresses Clous for having ‘an elegant balance between vibrant acidity and rich extract’. Meanwhile, The Wine Advocate’s Stephen Tanzer has said that this wine has ‘terrific flavour intensity and impressive depth for the appellation’.
