An introduction to Domaine Louis Latour, Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru, Les Chaillots, Burgundy

Les Chaillots is a Premier Cru appellation the Aloxe-Corton commune found in the Côtes de Beaune in eastern France’s Burgundy region. It is sub-divided into three vineyard sections and is renowned for its Pinot Noir wines. The French word for pebble is “caillou”, an indication of the origins of the name of this vineyard which has stony soils. Aloxe-Corton is Latour family’s home village. As such, they have been closely involved in its viticultural affairs for more than three centuries. Wines from Aloxe-Corton typically combine the finesse of Côte de Beaune and the power of Côte de Nuits wines. The Domaine Louis Latour Aloxe-Corton Chaillots boasts fragrant cherry and liquorice underpinned by hints of walnut in a fresh and delicate palate closing with a long and balanced finish. This Premier Cru is suitable for ten to 15 years of cellaring.

Understanding Domaine Louis Latour, Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru, Les Chaillots, Burgundy

The domaine manages over 90% of this Premier Cru. Supporting the domaine’s sensitivity to the environment, it farms its Pinot Noir in Les Chaillots sustainably on alluvial, sand, and gravelly limestone soils. The site’s easterly aspect benefits the fruit with gentle, steady sunlight for gradual, balanced ripening and finessed wine. To preserve the quality of the fruit, a highly selective manual harvest ensures that only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Grand Cru sees traditional open-vat fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a soft, textured mouthfeel. It is aged in 35% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for ten to 12 months to allow components to unfurl for greater depth and complexity.
