Château Guiraud, one of the most famous estates within the Sauternes appellation, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. This prestigious estate was officially classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. Château Guiraud has experienced a renaissance under the stewardship of a group of passionate wine enthusiasts and friends who have taken the helm. These include names such as Robert Peugeot (of the automobile fame) and renowned vigneron Olivier Bernard. Together, they have infused the estate with a blend of respect for historical winemaking practices and a commitment to sustainability, converting to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The estate’s 85 hectares of vineyards are planted to Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, with the former varietal dominating the blend in most of the estate’s lusciously sweet botrytised wine.

Understanding Chateau Guiraud Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes, Bordeaux
The vineyard of Château Guiraud is a patchwork of micro-terroirs, each contributing unique characteristics to the wine. The soil, a harmonious composition of gravel, sand and clay, is ideally suited to Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, allowing for the development of the complex sugar and acid structure that defines Sauternes. Vines are perfectly situated for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), a mist-induced fungus which concentrates the sugars and flavours in the berries for Sauternes dessert wine. Grapes are harvested in waves. This meticulous selection process ensures that only the best fruit contributes to the Grand Vin. Plots see individual fermentation in new oak and the wine matures in oak for at least 24 months. This careful craftsmanship yields a wine that is not only a sublime expression of Sauternes but also a reflection of the unique character and heritage of Château Guiraud. Château Guiraud features candied apricot, honey, ginger, exotic spice, vanilla and toast all enveloped in a rich, silky palate balanced by fresh acidity. This wine has excellent ageing potential.
