Located in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux, France, Château Filhot's legacy is deeply entwined with the area's celebrated winemaking history. The estate’s vineyards have existed since the first half of the 17th century and the château was founded in 1709 by Romain de Filhot. Château Filhot has been synonymous with exceptional dessert wines for over three centuries. Château Filhot’s reputation soared in the 19th century, particularly after its classification as a Second Growth in the prestigious 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. The château, with its picturesque landscape and classical architecture, is one of the largest and oldest in the region and had been managed by the Lur-Saluces family since the French revolution in the 18th century. This acclaimed vigneron lineage includes connections with the legendary Château d'Yquem. The present-day owner and manager is a descendant of the original Filhot family. Understanding Chateau Filhot 2eme Cru Classe, Sauternes, Bordeaux
The vineyards of Château Filhot, spanning over 62 hectares, benefit from a southwest aspect near the Ciron River which helps create the unique microclimate necessary for the development of Botrytis cinerea or noble rot. This crucial natural phenomenon concentrates the grapes' sugars and flavours, creating the foundation for the wine's extraordinary depth and sweetness. The soil, a harmonious blend of gravel, sand and clay, contributes to the distinctiveness of the grapes. Grapes are harvested by hand in several passes to select only the most perfectly botrytised bunches. The winemaking process involves meticulous individual varietal fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This promotes flavour and character precision of each grape type and supports fruit purity. Ageing occurs for 24 months in French oak, a third of which is new, before blending and bottling. These stages enhance the wine's complexity and longevity. Château Filhot features apricot, honey, citrus and a hint of exotic spice in a silky, lusciously sweet palate balanced by vibrant acidity. This dessert wine has exceptional cellaring capacity.
