Understanding La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, Saint-Julien, Bordeaux
The blend for Croix de Beaucaillou is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot, reflecting the classic profile of Bordeaux's Left Bank wines. The grapes are carefully selected from the younger vines of the Ducru-Beaucaillou vineyards, which enjoy the same esteemed terroir of deep gravelly soils. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, followed by ageing in 60%-new French oak barrels for 12 months. These processes are carefully managed to preserve the wine's vibrant fruit flavours and to impart a subtle, balanced oak influence. Croix de Beaucaillou features blackberry, cassis, hints of cedar, tobacco and spice in a powerful and refined palate with supple tannins. This second wine is both captivating in its youth and promising for long-term ageing.
