A brief history of Chateau Haut-Marbuzet, Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux

Situated on the esteemed gravelly slopes of Saint-Estèphe, Château Haut-Marbuzet was founded in the mid-18th century but its modern history dates to 1952 when Hervé Duboscq acquired the estate. His descendants still manage the house today, Haut-Marbuzet was among the original Crus Bourgeois rated in 1932 which was followed by promotion, in 1978, to the Crus Grand Bourgeois Exceptionnels. Under the Duboscq family's guidance, Haut-Marbuzet has embraced a philosophy that combines traditional practices with avant-garde techniques, ensuring the production of consistently exceptional wines. The estate's unique approach, particularly its generous use of new oak in ageing, has set it apart in a region bound by tradition. Château Haut-Marbuzet cultivates about 40 hectares of vines planted half to Cabernet Sauvignon and two-fifths to Merlot with the remaining holdings dedicated to Cabernet Franc.

This wine captures the essence of the estate’s philosophy, presenting a lavish bouquet of ripe dark fruits, spices and a discernible oak influence that complements rather than dominates. This Grand Vin is widely viewed as being rivalling the quality of Cru Classé wines making it much sought after by collectors and wine aficionados.

Understanding Chateau Haut-Marbuzet, Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux

The terroir of Château Haut-Marbuzet is characterised by deep gravel over clay subsoils, ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate's dedication to low yields and high-quality fruit is evident in the vineyard's meticulous management, with a focus on sustainable viticulture practices that respect the environment and the vine. Harvesting is conducted as late as possible for richly developed grapes. Attention to detail is paramount to ensure that only the best grapes make it to the winery. The vinification process is tailored to enhance the natural attributes of the harvest, with temperature-controlled fermentation and ageing for 18 months in new French oak. This meticulous care extends through to bottling, conducted with minimal intervention to preserve the wine's integrity and distinctiveness. Château Haut-Marbuzet features black fruit, cassis, toasty oak, vanilla and a hint of earthy truffle in a smooth palate enveloped in a luxurious tannic structure. This wine has considerable ageing potential.
