Understanding Chateau Cos Labory 5eme Cru Classe, Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux

The vineyards of Château Cos Labory boast a mix of gravelly and clay soils, which are exceptionally well-suited for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate's approach to viticulture emphasises careful management of the vineyards to ensure the health and quality of the vines, some of which are over 40 years old. The strategic location of the château, coupled with the region's unique microclimate, allows for optimal grape ripening. Harvesting at Château Cos Labory is conducted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring only the best grapes are selected. The winemaking process for the first wine includes fermentation in stainless steel vats followed by ageing in American oak barrels, an unusual practice for Bordeaux châteaux. This careful blend of traditional and modern techniques results in a wine that truly represents the character of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, offering a harmonious balance of power, elegance and complexity. This wine displays dark fruit, cassis, earthy undertones, cedar and a touch of spice in a powerful palate with robust tannins and balanced acidity. These attributes support its notable ageing potential, allowing it to evolve gracefully and gain additional layers of flavour and aroma over the years.
