Understanding Le Marquis de Calon Segur, Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux
Fruit for Marquis de Calon is meticulously chosen from select younger vines of the Chateau Calon Segur estate, known for its unique terroir featuring gravelly soils over a clay base. This combination contributes to the production of grapes that are both powerful and elegant, embodying the typical profile of Saint-Estèphe wines. The wine undergoes a gentle fermentation process and is then aged for 17 months in oak, a third of which is new. This ageing imparts subtle woody and spicy notes while maintaining the integrity and purity of the fruit. Predominantly a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Marquis de Calon results in a wine that displays dark fruit, a touch of liquorice and subtle oak on a full-bodied palate with robust tannins. This wine has considerable cellaring potential.
