A brief history of L'If, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

L'If is a relatively new yet esteemed addition to Bordeaux's producers, nestled in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation. The estate was acquired in the early 21st century by Jacques Thienpont, known for his work with the iconic Le Pin in Pomerol, marking a new chapter in the region's winemaking landscape. It is renowned for its red blend wines. Named after the French word for the yew tree, "l'if," which dots the estate, this venture represents Thienpont's commitment to expressing the unique characteristics of the Saint-Émilion terroir. Under his guidance, L'If has been reimagined with a focus on terroir-driven winemaking, emphasising the diversity and richness of the soils to produce wines of distinct identity and exceptional quality. When L’if was sold to Thienpont, the Right Bank property was called “Chateau Le Haut-Plantey” and, prior to this, wines were sold under the name of “Chateau La Bouygue”. The wine production at the property has seen a marked improvement since Thienpont's takeover.
