A brief history of Chateau Croque Michotte, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

Château Croque Michotte, set in the esteemed Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, is steeped in a rich winemaking history that traces back to the Middle Ages. At this time, it was named Croque Michotte and owned by England’s famous “Black Prince”, the heir to the then-English king. The winery changed hands over the centuries with its modern era beginning in the early 20th century when it was purchased by the Geoffrion family. The estate is found close to the Pomerol border with the esteemed Château Gazin nearby. The 14-hectare estate is planted nearly three-quarters to Merlot followed by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Unusually for Bordeaux, the house’s vines are located on one large plot rather than scattered around an estate. The average vine age is 55 years and farming has been organic since 1993. In 2022, the house withdrew from Saint-Émilion’s classification system joining several other estates that had taken similar action. The Geoffrions have skillfully blended traditional practices with modern innovation, ensuring that each bottle of wine is a reflection of their passion and the unique qualities of Saint-Émilion.
