A brief history of Chateau La Clotte Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux

Nestled within the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation, Château La Clotte has gained recognition for its exceptional terroir and the quality of its wines, which embody the depth and complexity associated with Saint-Émilion. The estate enjoyed Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé status since the 1955 launch of the ranking but, alongside Ausone and Cheval-Blanc, it didn’t submit for the 2022 re-classification. In 2014, the Vauthier family acquired the property with their Mazière holding company from the Chailleau family who had managed the house during the twentieth century. Under the stewardship of its current owners, Château La Clotte has seen significant investments in both the vineyard and winemaking facilities. Despite its modest four hectares, the estate has consistently produced wines that rival those of its more expansive neighbours, earning it a reputation as a hidden gem among connoisseurs. Merlot dominates with 85% of plantings followed by Cabernet Franc and a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Understanding Chateau La Clotte Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux

The vineyards of Château La Clotte are planted on the appellation's famed limestone and clay soils, providing an ideal foundation for Merlot—the dominant variety in their blend. This terroir is known for imparting minerality and depth to the wines, a characteristic that distinguishes Saint-Émilion's best. Precision viticulture is practised to ensure that each vine achieves optimal ripeness, reflecting the estate's commitment to quality over quantity. Sustainable farming practices are at the heart of Château La Clotte's ethos, with a focus on maintaining the health and vitality of the vineyard ecosystem. Harvesting is conducted manually to ensure that only the best grapes are selected for production. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve fruit purity followed by ageing in majority-new French oak barrels to enhance the wine's complexity and structure. Château La Clotte features ripe red and black fruit, hints of spice, chocolate and a touch of minerality in a velvety palate with well-integrated tannins. This wine is admired for its ability to evolve, developing greater complexity and richness over time.
