Located in the historic Saint-Émilion appellation, Château Clos de Sarpe is a Grand Cru Classé house that showcases the distinguished heritage of Bordeaux Right-Bank winemaking. The estate dates back to the early 20th century. Since 1986, Château Clos de Sarpe has been meticulously cared for by the Beyney family and continues to be a family affair. The estate has held certified organic status since 2020. This small yet remarkable estate spans a mere 3.5 hectares, making it one of the smallest vineyards in the region. Vines are made up of 85% Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. Recently, the Beyneys planted a small quantity of Petit Verdot vines to monitor the varietal’s potential in the framework of global warming. The estate, known for its old vines and traditional viticulture techniques, consistently produces wines that embody the depth and elegance of Saint-Émilion's terroir.

Understanding Chateau Clos de Sarpe Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux

The vineyard of Château Clos de Sarpe is a perfect example of Saint-Émilion's diverse terroir, with a blend of clay and limestone soils that are particularly suited for Merlot. The château emphasises traditional and biodynamic farming methods, and the advanced age of the vines, some over 60 years old, contributes to the grapes' intensity and complexity. This small estate benefits from a microclimate that ensures optimal ripening conditions. Grapes are handpicked to guarantee the highest quality. The winemaking process is a blend of tradition and innovation, with fermentation taking place in concrete vats to preserve the fruit's natural character, followed by ageing in French oak barrels. This approach results in a wine that not only captures the essence of Saint-Émilion but also reflects the unique identity and passion of Château Clos de Sarpe. This Grand Vin displays dark berry, plum, liquorice and subtle earthy undertones in a smooth palate with well-integrated tannins. Clos de Sarpe is renowned for its longevity, gracefully unfolding layers of flavour and aroma over time, making it a prized addition to any connoisseur's collection.
